Introduction
The “Improving Climate Resilience of Vulnerable Communities and Ecosystems in the Gandaki River Basin, Nepal – FP 131” – or “Gandaki Basin Climate Resilient Project (GBCRP)” for short – is a seven‑year programme funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Its objective is to strengthen the ability of communities to cope with climate change by promoting ecosystem‑based and livelihood‑focused adaptation in the Gandaki River Basin (GRB). The GRB covers about 21 % of Nepal’s land area and is one of the largest river basins in the country.
Project Summary
The project shifts climate change adaptation planning from traditional political units such as districts and municipalities to the scale of the river basin itself. Instead of working in isolation, the entire landscape along the basin is treated as one unit, linking upstream and downstream communities through coordinated climate‑resilient actions.
Gandaki River Basin will be used as a model to showcase how climate‑resilient development
in large river basins can occur throughout Nepal.
